SCWA Again Distributing Detailed Water Report By Mail

By Wednesday, May 24, the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) will have provided its detailed Annual Water Quality Statement to all postal patrons in Suffolk County for the second year in a row, SCWA Chairman Michael A. LoGrande announced today.

"We believe the best way to assure our customers of the safety of their drinking water is to provide accurate information," LoGrande said. "For a number of years we were doing this, in part, by publishing a multi-page legal notice. Last year, in accordance with new federal requirements, we expanded this important report and began the practice, which we are continuing this year, of having Suffolk Life deliver it in the form of a 12-page booklet. Customers should look for the statement in their mail next Wednesday."

Furthermore, although the size of the booklet remains the same, the Water Authority has once more expanded the amount of information it contains. "The statement provides results of tests performed last year at the SCWA Lab, the largest potable water testing laboratory in New York State and the largest groundwater testing facility in the nation," LoGrande said. "We currently test more than 70,000 water samples a year and are reporting readings on samples from every area we serve. The statement explains how we provide pure drinking water to more than a million Suffolk residents and contains suggestions for obtaining additional information. We hope people who consume the water we provide will enjoy finding out more about the quality, safety and reliability of our product."

In order to deliver the document to customers who have water service in Suffolk County but do not live here, the Water Authority ordered thousands of additional booklets. According to SCWA Deputy CEO for Administration Michael Stevenson, mailings for these customers are also underway. "Special thanks go to the folks at AHRC in Bohemia, as well as to many of our own employees, for making it possible for us to complete this important project by the end of May," Stevenson said.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is a public benefit corporation operating by virtue of the Public Authorities law of the State of New York. Serving about 80% of Suffolk's residents, it operates without taxing power on a non-profit basis.
